9 Ingredients to a Better Blog Post

By: Sunday, November 20, 2011
Ever wonder what a great business blog post looks like? Well, here is a great example from one of my favorite Compendium customers, Swanson Health Products:

Here is what makes it a great business blog post:

  1. It’s optimized (on-page by Compendium / other efforts by Swanson)
  2. Had a banner ad linking to it from almost every blog page
  3. Has a nice CTA banner at the bottom
  4. Shows off the brand with concrete content
  5. It's  Top 5 List which are easy to digest and are very helpful
  6. Humanized with great pictures of employees and product
  7. Juiced with links
  8. Obvious CTA to increase conversion to the e-commerce site
  9. It's a very easy "go-to" page that can be broadcast online
These are just a few blogging best practices that you can implement in your own corporate blogs. Given our area of focus, Compendium builds tools that enable marketers (like Ben Hanson at Swanson) to produce solid posts like this. Those features include:
  • "Top Posts" list show an author what has driven the most attention in the past.
  • A Content Ideas "feed" in the author user interface
  • List that prompts Suggested key phrases that map to important messages that a business wants to use in the blog
I recommend writing down observations about the types of posts you end up reading on your favorite blogs. Noting the format, the number of links, use of images, and kind of language will help you think about your own blog writing.
