The News Media, Your Business & Search
By Compendium Staff
Seems like more often than not I get news updates from my Twitter feed instead of traditional media outlets. I don't necessarily think this is a bad thing but it does give the appearance that the news media (and potentially your business) is somewhat out of touch.
Take, for instance, this morning's news of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. As I ate breakfast and watched the news, I was surprised by number of breaking stories that grew from social media channels. In one case the person being interviewed stated he was receiving up to the minute news from his iPad and Twitter feed...like he knew the news before the news outlets did.
In many ways I'm grateful for the speed at which news gets distributed across social channels but it does impact the way we think about traditional marketing and distribution. If you're waiting for the 5:00 news for your updates or a quarterly newsletter, are you really in tune with what's going on in the world? On the flip side, if your business is holding onto information until the company newsletter is finished, are you providing your clients with the best service? Are you making yourself obsolete?
